Telugu-language epic Baahubali: The Beginning, directed by SS Rajamouli, has grossed $ 20m opening weekend in India and broken a string of box office records in India and the United States.

The $ 40m historical drama, headlined by Telugu stars Prabhas and Rana Daggubati took $ 7.8 on the opening day on July 10, breaking the $ 7m record set in 2014 Hindi hit Happy New Year, starring Shah Rukh Khan.

Baahubali also had the highest opening weekend of any Indian film at the box office the US, grossing about $ 4.4 million from 250 screens. The average screen of about $ 17,000 was only surpassed Minions with $ 27,000.

Among other records, Baahubali also became the fastest Indian film to reach Rs1bn ($ 15.8 million) benchmark. The Hindi dubbed version, presented by director-producer Karan Johar, scored the highest first-day sale of a dubbed film in India, and it is also the highest grosser among all Hindi dubbed movies with a take of $ 3,400,000th

The film's distributor for the Indian diaspora has a two-month window for the film, after which an international section will be shown to non-diaspora sales agents and distributors.

Produced by Arka Media Works was the two-part epic shot in Hyderabad Ramoji Film City, other Indian places and Bulgaria, while John Hughes' Tau Film and Korea Macrograph was among the companies that worked on the extensive VFX sequences in the film.

The story, based on Indian mythology, follows a fictional hero who teams up with a warrior princess to rescue an imprisoned queen.

The film's opening weekend figures again show himself strong in the south Indian film industry, which often can outgross Bollywood - or north India's Hindi-language film industry - because of a passionate fan base and strong established constellation of filmmakers and stars.

SS Rajamouli previous credits include period epic Warrior (Magadheera) and high-concept drama Fly (Eega), both of which grossed more than $ 16m (Rs1bn) worldwide.
